Summary

This article describes how to exclude specific files from backup and copy jobs.

Resolution

You can explicitly exclude a file (or files) from a backup or a copy job by drilling down on the node or directory you are backing up (or copying) and clicking on the file or directory. The object will have an X beside it, showing that it will not be included in the job.

You can also exclude files and directories by creating a filter (called a "rule" in DPX) that you can apply to jobs. For example, you may wish not to back up certain Windows files, such as any file with the file extension .exe. You would create an exclusion rule named, for example, "NOEXE" and then apply that rule to jobs for Windows nodes. In this example, for a backup, all .exe files are excluded from base, incremental, and differential backups.

Note: File exclusion is not currently supported for NDMP nodes.

To create file exclusions from the Backup or Copy screen:

  1. Click the File Exclusions button. The File Exclusions screen appears.
  2. Click Add. The New Rule dialog appears.
  3. Give the rule a name (for example, "NOEXE" as above) and click Add on the right side of the dialog to enter the file pattern you wish to exclude. Use * for wildcards.
  4. Click OK.

Existing definition files are displayed under Saved Rules on the left side of the screen. To edit a rule (or filter):

  1. Highlight the rule you wish to modify.
  2. Click the Edit button. The Add Exclusion dialog appears with the filename field displaying the filter you highlighted.
  3. Modify it and click OK.

Existing definition files are displayed in the Saved Rules box on the left side of the screen. To delete a rule:

  1. Highlight the rule you wish to delete.
  2. Click the Delete button.

Note: Exclusions are case sensitive.
