Summary

This article provides suggestions for troubleshooting return code 1118.

Symptoms

DPX is generating a return code of 1118 (MS_TMM_NLTAPE_AND_VOLSER_EXIST).

Resolution

This error indicates that the volser on a tape could not be read after the tape was mounted. Furthermore, the DPX database expected this tape to have a label.

  1. If this is a new tape, look for messages indicating "Please run scan on jukebox". The jukebox inventory may not be synchronized with DPX; run an inventory scan.
  2. Is this a new tape? Clean the tape drive and then read the label on the tape via device control. The absence of a label will be evident with a tape status of NL (for Not Labeled). If you have more than one tape drive, try the other drive.
  3. If this is a SAN environment, this may be a critical problem where the label has been overwritten due to the lack of reserve/release in a multiple initiator environment. Enable reserve/release for DPX to avoid future data loss.
