Can I repair a snapshot by running the Verifier tool or a check disk on an instant availability mapped drive?

Resolution

When a volume is Instant Availability mapped, a read only copy of the snapshot along with a temporary writable work area is created. The resulting filer LUN allows the user to read/write to the volume while maintaining the underlying read only copy of the snapshot image intact

The OSSV verifier tool that is provided by Catalogic is a tool that uses 'chkdsk' to verify snapshots on an Instant Availability mapped drive. However, in this context chkdsk run against an Instant Availability mapped drive can only report on the status, it cannot be used to repair the underlying image on the filer. Any changes via checkdisk on this instant availability map will apply only to the LUN on the filer and not the underlying snapshot or base image.

If you discover a problem with the Verifier tool or through running chkdsk on an IA mapped drive, the only mechanism to correct the problem is to perform a base backup.
