Summary

During an installation of DPX on Windows, InstallShield fails and reports that the target volume is out of free space. To resolve this issue, temporarily change the <tmp> environmental variable.

Symptoms

When installing on Windows, the InstallShield installer fails to progress indicating that the target volume does not have enough space. This occurs even when enough space exists on the target volume.

Resolution

A common source of installation errors on Windows is low disk space on the computer. As part of the InstallShield installation process, the installer extracts a temporary Microsoft installer file, which is a file with an .msi extension. This .msi file is copied to the location specified by the <tmp> environment variable for the installation user. If the location is a low free space drive on the system, the installation issue results.

By temporarily changing the <tmp> environment variable for the logged in user, you can work around this free space requirement for installation.

To temporarily change the <tmp> environment variable:

  1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties > Advanced.

  2. Click Environment Variables. The Environmental Variables dialog box displays.

  3. Change the <tmp> directory location to a new volume/folder combination where more space resides on the computer. Change this location under both User variables and System variables.

In the example below, the folder called D:\NewLocation is created and the environment variable <tmp> is specified as that location:

  4. Ensure that you change the <tmp> location back to the original when you are finished installing BEX/NSB.
