Summary
DPX Block level jobs may fail on some Windows machines citing insufficient disk space. DPX typically reports this error while validating that disk space is available for a snapshot operation. However, this error often is not found on the system or application event viewer logs on the client system.
Symptoms
- Block level jobs fail with message:
X.X.X.X 5/11/2018 12:53:07 am SNBSNP3069E 16276: VOL[\\?\Volume{VOLUMESERIAL NUMBER\]: Insufficient disk space available to run the backup
X.X.X.X 5/11/2018 12:53:07 am SNBSNP3069E 16276: Available free space[32]M, Need [500]M free space
X.X.X.X 5/11/2018 12:53:07 am SNBSNP6200E 16276: Failed to perform the pre snapshot setting for volume(E:\); rc (-302)
- When looking at the drives on the client the backup is failing, for there is less than 500 MB of free space available.
Resolution
DPX uses Volume shadow copies (VSS) to take snapshot of the drives or mount points for backup: VSS has Minimum Free Space Requirements to take a snapshot
The minimum amount of disk space required to run a DPX Block level backup depends on these requirements
Volume size | Free space requirement | Example |
smaller than 5GB | 10% free space required on volume | 3 GB volume requires 300 MB free space |
larger than 5GB | minimum of 500MB required | 10GB volume requires a minimum of 500MB free space |
Once the requirements were met the servers backed up successfully.
