Summary
If a SnapVault backup job fails, the error VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR is reported.
Symptoms
If a SnapVault backup job fails, the following messages are shown in the backup report:
SNBAPH_335J Sending BACKUP message to sssnap...
SNBSNP3069E 2660: MsSnapShot::add_to_snapshot_set:AddToSnapshotSet failed error RC(0x8004230f) (VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR)
Additionally, the following Microsoft VSS errors are seen in the Windows event viewer's system event logs:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {65ee1dba-8ff4-4a58-ac1c-3470ee2f376a} and Name SW_PROV is [0x80004002].
