Summary

OSS backup fails because of existing .RELATIONSHIP.ACTIVE file in the job's qtree folders on the OSS server.

Symptoms

Sometimes a failure of an OSS backup job might leave .RELATIONSHIP.ACTIVE files in the qtree folders associated with the job which are located directly under the root of the destination volume on the OSS server. This is attributed to abnormal conditions such as hardware failures on the destination, reboot of the OSS server, network failure, etc.

If this occurs, subsequent instances of the same backup job fail with the following message:

Node: x.x.x.x Time: xxxx Module: sssvh No.: SNBNCJ_103E Message: Task 3 NDMP_LOG: id(xxx), type(NDMP_LOG_ERROR), text(Relationship and it's control file [<volume letter>:/[job name]<host name>@{volume ID}/.RELATIONSHIP.ACTIVE] already existing. Please delete relationship before creating)

Node: x.x.x.x Time: xxxx Module: sssvh No.: SNBSVH_968E Message: Create relationship(<volume letter>:/[job name]<host name>@{volume ID}) failed with exception: NDMPSessionException(0, createRelationship exception: <EXCEPTION CATEGORY="BEXEXCEPTION"><CODE>501</CODE></EXCEPTION>

Resolution

  1. Locate all such files in the form listed below in the qtree folders associated with this job on the OSS server.
  2. Remove them.
  3. Rerun the job which will succeed at this point.

[<volume letter>:/[job name]<host name>@{volume ID}/.RELATIONSHIP.ACTIVE]
