Summary

This article outlines the specific requirements of tape device ID usage in Data ONTAP 8.1.x.

Symptoms

After upgrading a NetApp storage system from Data ONTAP 7.3 to 8.1.1, the local tape drives no longer functions with NSB. The device is a SAN attached NEO8000e tape library with 10 HP Ultrium LTO4 drives.

The NDMP backup to the local device path returns error RC 1104.

The job log displays the following messages:

The *.ncl log from the ndmp proxy node displays the following message:

Wed Nov 07 09:30:09 2012 SNBNCX6014E ERROR: Task 6, type(TAPE-CONTROL), state(TIO_RR); Error(106, NC_TASK_ERROR_TAPE_OPEN), NDMP error(16, NDMP_NO_DEVICE_ERR); Connection 0, Message token 0

Resolution

In the NSB management console, navigate to Configuration > Devices for each device path or SAN device path definition associated with the NetApp storage system running Data ONTAP 8.1.x. Change the definition from /dev/nrst#a to nrst#a.
