Summary

When running the Agentless Delete VM/VMDK Wizard, the temporarily created LUN, datastore, and volume remain and are not removed as expected. To resolve: Scan the NetApp storage system into DPX with its DNS name. In DNS, create a new alias for the storage system pointing to the iSCSI interface's IP address. This addresses future deletions. Create a reverse lookup zone (non-AD) on the DNS servers and added PTR records for the short name and FQDN to the iSCSI IP.

Symptoms

When running the Agentless Delete VM/VMDK Wizard, the temporarily created LUN, datastore, and volume remain behind and are not removed as expected.

iSCSI is configured on a different interface than the NetApp NDMP interface IP address that is scanned into DPX.

The Agentless Delete VM/VMDK Wizard displays the following error:

Failed to delete VMDK(s) from the VM 'datacenterxxx/xxxxxx.
Reason: java.lang.Exception: Unable to retrieve filer node.

The rmi server logs displays the following entries:

Tue Jan 15 12:49:23 2013; TGID(TG-393), TID(rmi-393); Calling method deleteESXVM of object com.syncsort.bex.vilib.VILib@6a7e75dd

Tue Jan 15 12:50:13 2013; TGID(TG-393), TID(rmi-393); SNBVLB_003D Deleting Virtual Machine: XXXXXXXX

Resolution

Workaround:

Manually remove the LUN, volume, and datastore that remain.

As the IP address for the ISCSI interface is not scanned into the DPX Enterprise, there is no way to notify the NetApp storage system to remove the LUNs, volumes, and datastores.

To resolve, scan the NetApp storage system into DPX with its DNS name. In DNS, create a new alias for the storage system pointing to the iSCSI interface's IP address. This addresses future deletions.

Solution:

Create a reverse lookup zone (non-AD) on the DNS servers and added PTR records for the short name and FQDN to the iSCSI IP.
