Summary

After booting a Windows VM created by a successful Instant Virtualization job, the optical drive is not mounted to a drive letter.

Symptoms

The optical drive in the VM is not assigned a drive letter and subsequently does not display in the Windows Explorer list for "Devices with Removable Storage".

Resolution

This is caused by the automatic alignment of drive letters during the Instant Virtualization job. In certain instances when a VM is created by a virtualization job, the drive letters are not assigned to volumes in the same order as the source machine. DPX attempts to reassign the drive letters to match their original configuration, however the drive letter for the optical drive cannot be assigned.

The correct drive letter must be manually assigned to the optical drive using the Disk Management tool.
