Summary

In DPX 4.4.4, Block Backups from Linux clients to NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP (CDOT) servers are supported. In previous DPX 4.4 releases, such backups were not supported. However, if the Enterprise is at release 4.4.4 and the Linux client is at an earlier DPX release, DPX inadvertently permits you to define and save a CDOT block backup job for that client. Surprisingly, once you update the Linux client to DPX 4.4.4, the previously defined and previously run Linux-to-CDOT job for that client still fails.

Symptoms

If you attempt to run a Block Backup to a CDOT from a Linux client that is still on a previous DPX release, a message similar to the following appears:

Message: Create relationship(SS_tesvol/[Sles10441CltCdot]sles10sp4@APPS_) failed with exception: NDMPSessionException(0, createRelationship exception: <EXCEPTION CATEGORY="BEXEXCEPTION"><CODE>501</CODE></EXCEPTION>) Message: Task 3 NDMP_LOG: id(5,328), type(NDMP_LOG_ERROR), text(Relationship and it's control file [/.RELATIONSHIP.ACTIVE] already existing. Please delete relationship before creating)

If you later update the DPX 4.4.x Linux client to DPX 4.4.4, and try to run the previously created and previously attempted Block Backup to CDOT job, that job will fail with a “Modify relationship” error similar to the following:

Message: Modify relationship(SS_tesvol/[Sles10441CltCdot]sles10sp4@{DF5673CC}) failed with exception: NDMPSessionException(0, modifyRelationship exception: <EXCEPTION CATEGORY="BEXEXCEPTION"><CODE>501</CODE></EXCEPTION>) Message: Task 4 NDMP_LOG: id(19,281), type(NDMP_LOG_ERROR), text(CRelation::open_rw(/opt/DPX/RELATIONSHIPS/[Sles10441CltCdot]sles10sp4@{DF5673CC} /.RELATIONSHIP) failed. File not existing.)

Resolution

  1. Make a note of the information in the job definition.
  2. Clean up the old job definition by expiring and deleting the job.
  3. Run a Catalog Condense.
  4. Define and schedule a new job definition for Block Backups from the newly updated Linux client to CDOT.
