Symptoms
File Restore from tape failed with data backed up at the main site then transported to a remote site device cluster - with error "failed to get device assignment."
Resolution
The tape media type is LTO, so the restore job looks for the same type of device when the destination is set to use a different device cluster. This scenario resolved the problem:
1. The original device cluster was set up as LTO type, but the remote device cluster was setup as DLT device type even though it had LTO5 tape drive installed.
2. Deleted the remote device cluster temporarily and re-added it as LTO type.
3. Ran the restore selecting the redefined LTO jukebox. The job completed to restore the data.
4. Changed the device cluster back to DTL type to continue with production backup.
