Summary

ECX Restore is failing with an error that points to use of fibre channel (FC) and lack of FC Initiators.

Symptoms

During an ECX restore an exception similar to the one below will appear if there are no storage transport methods configured between the backup storage and the ESXi host(s). Depending on the method used during the backup an FC or iSCSI connection might be referenced in the error as missing.

Load VMware data: Failed to load storage information for source (<host>). Error = (StorageHostGetException).
Load VMware data: Failed to find an initiator group for ESX server (<host>) from storage server (<host>). Exception (com.catalogic.ecx.serviceprovider.common.StorageHostGetException) reports: (No host found for FC initiators)

Resolution

ECX will honor either connection during the restore, therefore configuring an iSCSI Software Initiator will be sufficient and likely the most direct approach to complete the restore providing that iSCSI protocol is enabled and supported on the network.

Fibre channel zoning would also be a viable option albeit a more complex one in some cases.
