Summary

What is the difference among base, differential, and incremental backups?

Resolution

A DPX backup job inherently contains base, incremental, and differential backup levels.

  • Base (BASE): Backs up all the data specified in the job (also known as a full backup).
  • Differential (DIFR): Backs up the data specified in the job that have changed since the last base backup of the same job.
  • Incremental (INCR): Backs up data specified in the job that have changed since the last base, differential or incremental backup of the same job.

Creating separate job definitions (with different names) for BASE, INCR, and DIFR jobs is incorrect. These backup levels are specified and scheduled in a single backup job.
