DPX block backups fail with error : could not find source filer

Symptoms

The backup job report shows the following errors:

X.X.X.X sssvh Tue Apr 04 12:19:45 2006 SNBSVH_240N Task 3 NDMP_LOG: id(0), type(NDMP_LOG_ERROR), text(could not find source filer)

or

X.X.X.X sssvh Thu Mar 29 12:26:58 2007 SNBSVH_240N Task 3 NDMP_LOG: id(0), type(NDMP_LOG_ERROR), text(cannot connect to source filer)

Resolution

The error is captured in the NDMP_LOG_ERROR message, "could not find source filer" and "cannot connect to source filer". This usually points to a network configuration issue.

In the first example above, the master, NDMP client, and target node were all able to resolve and communicate with the filer but the filer itself could not resolve the target node's IP address. The issue was resolved by updating the "hosts" file on the filer itself.

In the second log example, the IP in the filer's "hosts" file was incorrect.

The firewall on the master server may also prevent the filer from communicating with DPX. Check the firewall logs and add an exception if necessary.

This can be a DNS issue, we can change the FQN name to IP address.
