Summary

A backup fails due to Insufficient System Resources. This can occur if there is insufficient disk space on the Exchange server. It is possible that the Exchange Transaction Logs have grown large enough to occupy the entire volume.

Symptoms

The Insufficient System Resources error message in such a case can be clearly seen in the job log/job monitor.

Resolution

In Exchange backups, transaction logs can grow up to several gigabytes and eventually can fill up the entire volume, if you don't run backups and terminate these transaction logs regularly.

It is possible to move these logs to a different temporary location and then run the backup.

DPX would then be able to backup successfully which would result in truncation of the transaction logs. The transaction logs can be placed back into the normal location.

Procedure to move the transaction logs:

  1. Stop Exchange services (if not stopped already).
  2. Run ESEUTIL/mh to move log files to another location.
  3. Then Start Exchange services.
