Summary

A system error and memory dump occur on a Windows node following a DPX Block level backup job. To resolve this issue, either correct or replace registry keys or reinstall DPX.

Symptoms

Block Backup  Windows clients require a change journal driver to track the changes occurring on the source volume. The driver relies on two known registry locations within Windows servers. The registry paths are:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{533C5B84-EC70-11D2-9505-00C04F79DEAF}\

At both locations the UpperFilters key of type REG_MULTI_SZ should contain the value BexWinCj. If either of these keys are removed or incorrectly modified, a system error can occur during  Block Backup backups. The resulting memory dump reports a driver fault against BexWinCj.sys and a bugcheck_str value of 0x8e.

Resolution

Resolve this issue in one of the following ways:

  • The missing registry keys must be replaced or corrected and the client rebooted.
  • Alternatively, reinstall the DPX client. Since untracked changes have occurred, you must perform a new base backup of all source drives on the client.

Note: These registry keys are known Windows Registry key locations required for Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS). They can be modified manually or during the installation/uninstallation of other products.
