Summary

Tape mode restore is performed using an external tape, a tape that is not in the catalog of the DPX enterprise where the restore needs to be performed. In such a scenario, the job will fail with "Unable to get device assignment" error.

Resolution

Workaround: In order to get by the tape mode restore error, there are some procedures to be done before running a Restore Tape job. Specifically, the tape will first have to be added to the catalog and then assigned to the jukebox. These procedures are detailed below.

Adding tape to catalog:

  1. Open up the Operate Jukebox window for the jukebox in which this tape is located.
  2. Perform a Read Label operation on this tape, monitor this operation.
  3. While the read occurs, see what volser is read out of this tape and make a note of this. Once the read is completed, the tape will be returned to slot and the volume column will still read ?Medium not known?.
  4. Now go to Launch Panel à Configure Media.
  5. Select any Media Pool and add new media to it. Give it the volser that was just read from this external tape.
  6. The media will be created with status as New.

This new media with status "New" will still not be visible in Operate Jukebox window. In order to make the jukebox recognize it, this volser must be assigned to the jukebox by using the "Assign Tapes to Slots option.

After completing the above 2 steps, the tape mode restore can be performed from the Restore Tape window, by specifying Restore Volumes and Restore Patterns.
