Symptoms

xx.xx.xx.x1 aph Wed Sep 19 21:34:05 2012 SNBAPH_186E Jobdef component () found to be neither Virtual Volume nor Physical Volume

xx.xx.xx.x1 aph Wed Sep 19 21:34:05 2012 SNBAPH_345E Problem in computing virtual volumes from expanded job definition.

A backup of the SQL instance hosting the SharePoint configuration database backed up as standalone system succeeds.

Resolution

The following is documented in the Disk to Disk Backup and Restore Guide, Appendix C11:

Enabling Microsoft SharePoint Services VSS Writer on BEX SharePoint Control Nodes

Writers must be enabled. The component returned from the VSS Writer must be consistent with the actual SharePoint farm configuration, including searching and indexing components.

On the original SharePoint control node, view the VSS Writer output through a BEX login to Windows session. Perform the following procedure to enable the VSS Writer:

  1. On the SharePoint control node, click Start and enter CMD.
  2. Enter diskshadow /l mywrt.txt to open the DiskShadow console.
  3. Enter list writers.
  4. Review the output of mywrt.txt.
In most cases, the SharePoint Services Writer report displays application components, for example:

Component "SharePoint Services Writer:\SPSERVER\SharePoint\SharePoint_Config_b6196b42-b210-4849-af48-617609877422"

  • Log in to the controller node as a user with administrator permissions to SharePoint and Local Admin Permissions.
  • Open the SharePoint2010 command shell.
  • Register the SharePoint Writer by entering the following command: stsadm -o -registerwsswriter.
  • Ensure the SharePoint objects display.
