Summary

System table restore from tape fails due to open files that cannot be overwritten by the restore. Disabling Windows Search in Windows 7 Services manager corrects this condition.

Symptoms

When running a file-level System Table restore from tape, the restore fails. The failure occurs because files with user-mapped sections are open, and the restore cannot overwrite these files

When the Windows 7 System Table restore fails, error messages similar to the following are displayed:

Wed Sep 11 10:28:37 2013 SNBDRR1021E 2692: Error opening file C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles\00010001.dir, rc=1224
Wed Sep 11 10:28:37 2013 SNBDRR1224S 2692: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. Wed Sep 11 10:28:37 2013 SNBDRR3066D 2692: current [C:] [WIN2KSYS:]

The identified files may be in use by the Windows Search service.

Resolution

To resolve this condition, do the following:

  1. Open the Windows 7 Services manager.
  2. Find the Windows Search service and disable it.
  3. Re-run the System Table restore. The restore should run successfully.
  4. If needed, return to the Services manager and restore the original service settings.
