Symptoms
During the backup of a SQL data base instance that also includes a SSAS component the backup is successful. However, the restore fails with an error indicating that the file system's metadata xml files and the Database are not in a consistent state. There are dependencies on the xml files and the database that cannot be reconstructed in a consistent state due to the lack of VSS support for OLAP. There may be errors such as below during the restore process:
Resolution
Microsoft does not support the hot backup of a SQL SSAS database with their API. The SQL Analysis Services Database is not a relational database, but a combination of a database engine, reporting services, analysis services and the integration services for business intelligent applications. The DPX agent for SQL Server alone without the SQL API cannot fully protect this configuration on an online database. As a workaround the database can be un-mounted during the backup, which enables the System VSS writer to capture the file system with the related OLAP XML metadata. The database can then be brought back online after the backup or snapshot has completed.
