Summary



An ECX Application Backup job on a SQL Always ON database may fail with the following error on the primary AlwaysON Availability Group (AAG) node: "Failed to take snapshot of the VM...". When checked through the vSphere client, the following error displays: "An error occurred while taking the snapshot-QUIESCING ERROR."

Symptoms



  • An ECX Application Backup job on a SQL Always ON database may fail with the following error on the primary AlwaysON Availability Group (AAG) node: "Failed to take snapshot of the VM...".
  • When checked through the vSphere client, the following error displays: "An error occurred while taking the snapshot-QUIESCING ERROR."


Resolution



To resolve the issue, perform the steps found in the following VMware knowledge base article:

If the first step does not resolve the issue and the SQL AlwaysON job fails with the same error, uninstall and reinstall VMware Tools through the vSphere client. Repeat on all nodes in the cluster.

Note that the issue may also be related to database restores leaving behind extraneous files, which can be resolved through a reboot.
